NFL Week Eight Cheat Sheet

What up, what up, what up? It is a fall Saturday people, and we barely have time to enjoy the football that is all around us.

Our youngest wanted to go to a pumpkin patch a couple of weeks ago. Of course I didn't want to go, but for her...absolutely. We snuck it in on a Sunday morning, because, you know, that timeframe doesn't conflict with televised sports. I have admitted my dysfunction before, so there is no need to pile on.

Look at me representing Army Football and the Indiana Pacers at the same time -- whad-up, BOOSH!

Indiana Football Hoosiers in D.C. (kind of) this weekend!

This is great, right? The Hoosiers are coming to town to play an equally bad Maryland Terrapins team. They have a chance to win, and the ticket prices are low on StubHub -- win-win, right there, friends!

I have had my eye on that game since August, but...too much to do, and I will be in Herndon watching Boys-U16 soccer. What are you going to do? I love my teams, but my favoritest teams are the ones my kids are on.

Check this out, though. The Football Hoosiers played in the Rose Bowl 50 years ago. I knew they played in the Rose Bowl in 1967, but I didn't know the little tidbit in the caption to the photo in the linked article..."IU has more losses than any major college football program." I am aligned with some winners, baby!

Let's get to the games.

Minnesota Vikings vs. (+9.5) Cleveland Browns: The Browns are 0-7 and have only led in one game -- 7-3 over the New York Jets in Week Five -- and that lead lasted all of 5:06. The Vikings have won three straight, lead the NFC North, and Aaron Rodgers in on ice for a while. Things are looking good in Minneapolis. -- VIKINGS

Carolina Panthers vs. (-2.0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Panthers are on a two-game losing streak, and the Buccaneers have lost three straight. Tampa QB Jameis Winston actually has better stats this year than Carolina QB Cam Newtown. The Buccaneers have the 30th ranked defense while the Panther defense is ranked 3rd in the league. Tampa defenders are griping and pointing fingers, too. -- PANTHERS

Chicago Bears vs. (-9.0) New Orleans Saints: This is nuts...the Bears beat the Panthers last week on the strength of two defensive touchdowns, and QB Mitch Trubisky completing four of seven passes! They are not beating a hot Saints team, on a four-game win streak, in New Orleans with an historically anemic offense. -- SAINTS

Atlanta Falcons vs. (+4.5) New York Jets: Both of these teams are adept at giving up leads. You know about the Falcons historic collapse in the Super Bowl, and the Jets have given up 14-point leads in two straight losses. At 3-4, New York coach Todd Bowles should be a coach of the year candidate, because his team is severely lacking talent. You have to think Atlanta has enough talent to end their three-game losing streak this weekend. -- FALCONS

San Francisco 49ers vs. (-12.5) Philadelphia Eagles: Had a conversation with a very good friend of mine that is a big NFL pick 'em person today. Told that friend that the NFL season is much like a beach with the ebb and flow of the tide. No matter what is on the beach -- chairs, towels, sand castles -- after high tide, they are gone. Then things get "built" again. San Francisco will not go winless this year, and I bet they will be trending up by December. Philadelphia will not look like the best team in the NFL after Thanksgiving, either. That being said, high tide is not this weekend. -- EAGLES

Indianapolis Colts vs. Cincinnati Bengals: You know I don't pick the Colts unless they are a lock. Haven't picked them yet this year, and it doesn't look like I will until 2018. This would be a great game to attend, though -- two teams with nothing to play for matched against another awful team. When the Bengals are losing, Cincy fans are the Philly fans of the Midwest. Seriously, ask my friends...you feel threatened and things smell of body odor. -- BENGALS

Oakland Raiders vs. (-2.5) Buffalo Bills: For me, this game is a lot like the Falcons/Jets game...these teams confound me. I thought the Bills would be awful, and the Raiders would be in the Super Bowl hunt from Day One. Well, Buffalo is 4-2, and Oakland is lucky to be 3-4. Raider QB Derek Carr is back, and surprised all of us (me anyway) last week with his excellent performance off his quick return from a back injury. It's a long flight east with that bad back, though. -- BILLS

Los Angeles Chargers vs. (-7.0) New England Patriots: I was telling anyone that would listen (that number was small) before the season that the Chargers were going to flip the script, and win some of these close games they were losing. They started this year by losing four straight, three of them by fewer than three points. They have now made me look smart by winning three straight. With all of that, I will never bet on a mediocre West Coast team traveling to the East Coast to play coach Belli-death-lord. -- PATRIOTS

Houston Texans vs. (-6.5) Seattle Seahawks: Seattle maintains a legitimate home field advantage. Oh, and Texans owner Bob McNair recently said, with respect to the kneeling protests, that "we can't have the inmates running the prison." So, um, you probably don't have a lot of team unity going on in that Houston locker room. -- SEAHAWKS

Dallas Cowboys vs. (+2.0) Washington Redskins: I am still affected by the stench of the Cowboys loss to Denver in Week Two, but they have probably been better than what their 3-3 record might suggest. They've lost close games to good teams, and beat the teams they should have beaten since then. The Redskins are doing their thing -- maintaining mediocrity -- but now they have all these injuries. Their offensive line is a MASH unit. -- COWBOYS

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. (+3.0) Detroit Lions: This game doesn't enthuse me that much. These memes were funny though. That's Lions QB Matt Stafford in the ball cap, by the way. -- STEELERS

Denver Broncos vs. (-7.0) Kansas City Chiefs: Talk about ebb and flow of a season, remember that Broncos/Cowboys game I referenced earlier? Denver QB Trevor Siemian threw for four touchdowns in that game. The problem is that game was five weeks ago, and Siemian has only thrown two touchdowns since then. -- CHIEFS
